Salome\'s Last Dance

Salome's Last Dance

1988. Color. 88 minutes. English language. Image quality: very good.

Legendary Irish playwright Oscar Wilde attends an impromptu performance of his banned play "Salome" in a Victorian brothel, with the roles of Salome, John the Baptist, and King Herod all played flamboyantly by his prostitute pals, both male and female. Wilde put his own sexually risque spin on the New Testament tale in 1891, but director Ken Russell takes it to a whole new level of debauchery and weirdness in this campy, fetish-filled freak-show film version. Salome, the titular main character is a femme fatale who seduces her stepfather with an all-revealing striptease, and then demands the head of John the Baptist. Russell injects quite a bit of homoeroticism into the movie - leatherboy guards, Oscar Wilde cavorting with male lovers, an androgynous, loincloth-wearing John the Baptist, but he also includes some buxom, bare-breasted female beauties throughout the film to balance things out. Imogen Millais-Scott gives a wild and crazy performance as Salome. Also features Oscar winning actress Glenda Jackson. Recommended for those who enjoy offbeat cinema, a must have for Ken Russell fans.
