Robert Jackson is a wealthy sheep farmer in a remote, countryside location in New Zealand. He loves booze, guns, hunting stags, and performing unnatural acts on his daughter Cathy. Robert's wife Mary had suffered a stroke a few years earlier, and is confined to a wheelchair, unable to speak or walk. Since then, Cathy has taken on the role of a surrogate wife to her father, which includes satisfiying his sexual desires against her will. A newly hired shepard named Peter takes a liking to the farmer's daughter, who is extremely shy and reluctant to talk to him at first. Gradually, she becomes more and more at ease around Peter, and grows fond of him also. Cathy often seems nervous and afraid, and whenever Peter tries to hold her, she freaks out. It's obvious to Peter that something's wrong, but when he tries to get Cathy to open up, she becomes extremely angry and hostile towards him. Eventually, Cathy breaks down and reveals her dark secret inlvolving her father, to Peter. The two plan an escape, but Robert is determined to stop them at any cost. "Heart of the Stag" is a riveting drama featuring outstanding performances by the cast, and breathtaking New Zealand scenery.
