Mérette is a pretty child living within a strict Calvinist family in 19th century Switzerland. She is happy until her mother dies, after which Mérette blames God and gives up her religion. Her family turns against her, the villagers reject her, and her priest drives her into isolation. One day, Mérette goes skinny dipping in a pond, and encourages her young friends to join her for some innocent fun. Pasteur Magnoux however, doesn't think there's anything innocent about Mérette's behavior, and becomes so outraged that he gives her a vicious flogging with a stick. With its sepia tones and natural lighting, "Mérette" is a very painterly looking film that's beautiful to watch, and the lovely young actress Anne Bos gives a captivating performance in the title role that you'll not want to miss.

Contains nudity.
