The Nest

The Nest

Starting at:

(aka "El nido") 1980. Color. 107 minutes. English language. Image quality: good

Alejandro is a sixty-year-old widower who passes the time listening to classical music, playing chess, and hunting. Although these things offer him comfort, Alejandro is a lonely man. One day, he happens upon some students rehearsing the play "Macbeth" and is immediately struck by a lovely young girl named Goyita who recites her lines with impressive depth and understanding. The two soon meet and find each other fascinating, despite their great age difference. Goyita's family life is troubled, and she finds real joy spending time with kind, affectionate Alejandro. They dance, ride horses, and go on nature walks, each filing a void in the other's lonely world. Goyita's parents however, are not thrilled with their daughter's relationship with the old man, and forbid her to see him any longer. She continues to meet with Alejandro secretly, and the bond between them develops from friendship into love. Twelve-year-old Ana Torrent gives an amazing performance as the precocious, heavy-hearted Goyita. Unfortunately, her voice is dubbed from Spanish to English, but all the emotions in her expressive face still shine through. This is a touching, very tastefully done film that is very obscure and deserves to be rediscovered.
